Activities

So you might be wondering, "What sort of things are there to do in the 'Current Middle Ages'"?  Well, simply, everything!  Basically any craft that you can imagine has its roots in antiquity.  From forging and casting metal, to wood carving, to leather work, to textile arts, if it was done from 500-1600 AD we probably do it in the SCA, too.

Of course combat is a big draw for many folks in the SCA.  The SCA has several combat styles that happen under its umbrella.  There is "heavy fighting", where armored combatants suit up in "full" armour from the whole era of discussion, and engage in single or group (melee) combat against other opponents.  There is also "rapier" combat, where combatants generally use lighter armor and variations of fencing swords to also fight in single and melee combat engagements.  Combat archery and siege engines are also an aspect of some melee battles, allowing fighters with special archery equipment to fire projectiles into the fray!  SCA combat is a true martial art, with an interesting rule set.  There are no referees or judges in SCA combat.  Instead, each fighter is pledged on his honor to acknowledge the blows he receives as either "good" or "light" as he takes them.  Whether a single pair of fighters or a field of hundreds or even thousands, the displays of chivalry, prowess, and honor is a thing that must be experienced to be understood.

The very best of fighters, who exhibit prowess at arms and chivalrous behavior may one day even be dubbed a Knight of the Society by the King.

Many people are drawn to artistic and scientific endeavors within the Society, and many period works from humble pieces to museum-quality masterpieces have been turned out by its members.  Some events are geared solely to the Arts and Sciences, such as the Kingdom Arts and Sciences event, where participants bring forth their best works and research to be judged and displayed for the whole populace.

The very best of artisans, who exhibit exceptional skill at their art and teach it to others, may one day be inducted into the Order of the Laurel.

Being a volunteer organization, there is always a need for people who work "behind the scenes" to make things happen.  Each event requires the work of countless people who volunteer their time to coordinate workers, prepare meals, run the event check-in, and even clean bathrooms.  Of course the fighting and arts and sciences activities require volunteers to set up list fields and judging tables, and to provide marshalling and judging talent.

Those who have selflessly volunteered tremendous amounts of time and effort to make the Society work may one day be inducted into the Order of the Pelican.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with simply going to events to enjoy the sights, sounds, and activities of the day!  Whether spending an afternoon under a pavilion watching the fighting, or chatting with old friends around a campfire, or enjoying a sumptuous period feast, there is always something fun and exciting happening at an event.  Since there are SCA groups in most major cities around the United States, you can bet there is at least one event happening near you every weekend.
